Temporary Anchorage Devices

Orthodontic TADs

Temporary anchorage devices offer an innovative way to move teeth into proper positioning more efficiently. Temporary anchorage devices are able to reposition the teeth without the need for embarrassing or uncomfortable headgear and can also be used in conjunction with orthodontic braces to achieve the best results possible. Working with your orthodontist, Dr. Pashapour and his surgical team are able to more precisely position misaligned teeth using temporary anchorage devices, which are more convenient and less uncomfortable than traditional headgear.

What are temporary anchorage devices?

Temporary anchorage devices, which are often simply referred to as TADs, are small titanium screws that are temporarily attached to the jawbone or roof of the mouth. Temporary anchorage devices act as an orthodontic anchorage in order to reposition crooked or misaligned teeth. TADs are a more compact, efficient alternative to headgear that cause less discomfort as the teeth shift. Temporary anchorage devices are able to move teeth into a more ideal position in a shorter timeframe than what is to be expected with traditional headgear.

How are temporary anchorage devices placed?

Working closely with your orthodontist, we will ensure the proper placement of TADs that will achieve the desired results. The placement of temporary anchorage devices is a minimally invasive procedure that is often performed using only a topical anesthetic to ensure patient comfort. Once the area where the TAD is being placed is numb, Dr. Pashapour and his surgical team will carefully insert the anchorage device through the gum tissue and into the jawbone. Temporary anchorage devices can typically be placed quickly, resulting in a very short procedure. Following the placement of a temporary anchorage device, you may notice a slight pressure. Within 24-48 hours, your mouth will grow accustomed to the TAD, and you will no longer feel this sensation. Once your teeth have reached their new desired position, we can remove the temporary anchorage device. The removal of a temporary anchorage device is a simple procedure that can be performed in just a few minutes.

How can I keep my TADs clean?

A temporary anchorage device can be regularly cleaned just as you would clean your braces. You can brush your temporary anchorage device as you brush your teeth. You can also wash your mouth out with an antimicrobial mouthwash to keep the TAD clean. We can help answer any questions you may have about your temporary anchorage device or any specialized care you may need to follow after your procedure.
