What Is A Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a dental screw or post that is surgically inserted in the gumline and bone of the jaw. Once the dental screw has been secured into the jawbone, an abutment can be placed on the top of the dental implant. The abutment is attached to the top of the dental implant and is used to support the dental crown, which is the only part of the dental implant that will be visible when you talk, eat, or smile. A dental crown is customized specifically for you in order to create a beautiful, natural-looking smile. Dental implants support jawbone density by filling in the areas made by missing teeth.

Which Type Of Dental Implant Is Best For Me?

The first step in choosing the right dental implant that is best for your specific needs will begin with an oral examination of your missing teeth by our oral surgeon. If you are only missing 1-2 teeth, We may suggest traditional dental implants or zirconia dental implants, which are designed to replace 1 or several missing teeth. While traditional dental implants are an effective way to replace missing teeth, other forms of dental implant surgeries may be suggested if you are replacing a large amount of missing teeth.

For patients missing the majority of their teeth, Dr. Pashapour and his surgical team may recommend hybrid dentures, also known as implant supported dentures or an implant supported bridge. We may also suggest All-On-4® dental implants or All-On-6 dental implants for patients who have lost the majority or all of their teeth.

All-On-4® dental implants or All-On-6 dental implants can replace all the teeth of the upper or lower jaw using just 4 or 6 anchor screws respectively. We will help you determine which dental implant surgery is best suited to your particular needs and help answer any questions you may have.

BONE PRESERVATION

Dental implant therapy can help to prevent the gradual bone deterioration described below, since the action of the implant mimics that of the original root, transmitting chewing forces to the jaw bone in a natural way.

Fig. 2: If one or more teeth are lost, these forces cease and the bone may slowly recede. As a result, neighboring teeth may also move inwards, creating additional gaps, as shown in the illustration.

What Should I Expect During Dental Implant Surgery In Washington, DC?

The details of each dental implant surgery vary from patient to patient and will also depend on what type of dental implant surgery you are undergoing. Traditional dental implants for tooth loss are comprised of 3 parts, the anchorage screw or dental implant, the dental abutment, and the dental crown. Traditional dental implant surgery is typically broken up into 2 or more procedures that are spaced several months apart from one another.

To begin dental implant surgery, our oral surgeon will remove any broken teeth and the roots of the teeth that are being replaced. Dr. Pashapour and his surgical team will place the dental implant into the gumline and jawbone. An abutment will then be placed on your dental implant, which will securely affix your temporary dental crown to your dental implant. Following this portion of the procedure, we will then schedule your next procedure 3-5 months from the date of your first procedure. This allows time for the dental implant and jawbone to undergo the process of osseointegration, enabling the dental screw to securely bond with your jawbone and form a stable base for your permanent dental crown. In your follow-up procedure for dental implants, the permanent dental crown can be placed. We can recommend a highly skilled prosthodontist for you to have a permanent dental crown created and placed.

What Should I Expect After Dental Implant Surgery In Washington, DC?

Immediately following your first dental implant procedure, you may be limited to a softer diet while your dental implants undergo the process of osseointegration and fully bond with your jawbone. The length until your next dental implant procedure will depend on how many dental implants you have had placed and your individual rate of healing. Following your second dental implant procedure, you will meet with a prosthodontist who will help create a permanent dental crown that will be fully customized for your smile. Who Is A Proper Candidate For Dental Implants?

An ideal candidate for dental implants is a healthy individual who is looking to replace missing teeth permanently. Patients must have proper jawbone density in order to receive dental implants. If you are not a proper candidate for dental implants due to low jawbone density, we may be able to perform a dental bone graft in order to restore your jawbone density. We also offer sinus lift surgery for patients who are not dental implant candidates due to improper bone density of the upper jaw.

What Types Of Dental Implant Complications Are Common?

Dental implants are a safe, effective solution for missing teeth. When placed by an expert oral surgeon, there is very little risk of a dental implant complication. Despite being incredibly successful, as with any surgery, some patients can experience complications. Dr. Pashapour and his surgical team are familiar with even the least common dental implant complications. Patients may also seek treatment from our board certified oral surgeon to correct implant complications from a previous, less-skilled oral surgeon. We can remove failing implants or create a treatment plan to maintain failing implants. Dr. Pashapour and his surgical team also provide guided tissue regeneration, peri-implantitis treatment, and correction of malpositioned implants.
